The Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit Names Steve Tomkowiak New Executive Director
Steve Tomkowiak will be the new Executive Director of The Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit (FHCMD), effective August 6, 2018. Mr. Tomkowiak replaces Margaret Brown, who served tirelessly in this role since the passing of the center’s deeply respected and beloved founder, Clifford C. Schrupp, in 2013. Ms. Brown will continue her service to the center in the capacity of advisor, speaker and trainer.
In his new position, Mr. Tomkowiak will assume responsibility of the center’s direction and track record of promoting and protecting equal housing opportunities throughout the metropolitan Detroit area - a mission that has recovered over $11,000,000 for the plaintiffs since the center was established in 1977.
As a long-time contributing attorney to FHCMD and with a network of relationships with stakeholders at both HUD and MDCR, Tomkowiak’s leadership comes at the right time. “My goal is to continue to enhance our status as one of the leading fair housing centers in the nation,” says Tomkowiak.
“This is an exciting transition for FHCMD,” says Margaret Brown. “Steve has lived his entire life in the communities served by the center. His understanding of the civil rights needs of our citizens and experience handling enforcement proceedings, training, and education makes him an exciting new leader for the group.”
Steve’s first day on the Job will be August 6th.
The Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit (FHCMD), was established in 1977 as a private, non-profit, citizen based organization - with IRS 501 (c) tax exempt status.
