HUD Emphasizes Criminal Background

New guidance addressing discrimination complaints based on criminal background 
In April of 2016, HUD issued an Office of General Counsel Guidance on Application of Fair Housing Act Standards to the Use of Criminal Records by Providers of Housing and Real Estate-Related Transactions.
This guidance recognizes the fact that as many as 100 million U. S. adults have a criminal record of some type. "As of 2012, the United States accounted for only five percent of the world's population, yet almost one quarter of the world's prisoners were held in American prisons" (Bureau of Justice Statistics). The guidance addresses how real estate providers can and should look at the issues and how HUD will look at future complaints based on discrimination that involves criminal records.
